Vehicles in traffic can usually be recognised by the sound of their engines. However, all powered vehicles sound more or less quiet. This makes them dangerous for pedestrians, blind people, cyclists and other road users. Therefore, a special AVAS sound module has been developed which is dedicated to electric vehicles. It generates a sound that is comparable to an internal combustion engine.
The sound emitted by the module appears and disappears at a certain speed level. The AVAS warning system must also automatically generate an audio signal when the vehicle is reversing. Communication between the AVAS and the CAN trunk line takes place in real time. The driver can easily turn the system on or off using a switch. After restarting, the AVAS must be automatically set to the 'ON' position. The AVAS has a dustproof and waterproof casing.
In the USA, all new electric and hybrid models operating in pure electric mode below 30 km/h have already been required to systematically emit engine sounds for a long time. From July 2019, the installation of the AVAS pedestrian warning system is mandatory in all newly developed electric and hybrid cars in the European Union.
Also from July 2021, all newly registered electric vehicle models must be equipped with an audible AVAS vehicle warning system. For vehicles in the EU, the limit at which the vehicle must sound is 20 km/h. At faster speeds, the noise generated by the tyres on the road is sufficient as a warning.
- The audio warning system is designed for vehicles with a “silent” engine - PEVs (pure electric vehicles), HEVs (hybrid vehicles) and FCVs (fuel cell vehicles),
- The AVAS emits the artificial sound of an internal combustion engine,
- The AVAS module is a sensor enclosed in a compact casing, requiring little space and is easy to install,
- Guarantees low power consumption of up to 100 mA under normal operating conditions
- Internal communication with the vehicle's on-board electronics takes place via the CAN trunk line,
- The sound pressure level of the AVAS module is: 65 ± 5 dB at 1 m generated at 0 km/h - 30 km/h, while the minimum frequency variation rate is 0.8 % (km/h),
- The possibility to upload an individual sound emitted by the loudspeaker is available.
The AVAS vehicle warning sound system OEI800003448, which is available at OEI, meets all legal and quality requirements and is used by vehicle manufacturers for first assembly.
